Have you found that you have lost focus on your goals despite setting yourself some really motivating goals?
You were excited, enthusiastic and very positive about going to work on them but then you came up against some opposition.
This opposition can be a person, past failures, or anything that causes you to be distracted from your goals.
I believe that when you aim to make positive strides and focus on your goals,
there are also negative forces out there to counteract the positive ones.
Your path to your goals will not always be a simple straight forward one. You will be tested with many distractions at some point.
If you find yourself getting distracted from the pursuit of your goals then there are a few reasons why this is occurring.
1. Your Goals Are Not Powerful Enough.
If you find it difficult to focus on your goals, then look at your goals and ask yourself, do these goals really motivate me?
Will they get me out of bed to pursue them early in the morning or stay up very late at night to make them happen?
Why is this goal so important to me? What are the consequences if I do not achieve it?
If after you have answered these questions 100% honestly and you do not identify a weakness in the goals themselves then look at the other options. However, this is the most common reason why people lose focus of their goals, they do not pull them forward enough to keep you striving despite many distractions.
2. Lack of Organisation.
How can you best make use of your time so that you focus on your goals and get things done? Plan your day in advance.
This is a very useful tip. It requires a bit of practice and self-discipline but once you develop this habit it will help you focus your efforts on the right things.
Set aside a regular time where you lay out and plan your next day. I prefer the evening as this is when I'm least busy and less likely to face distraction. Do not answer phone calls or messages during this time. Give yourself the time to get your day sorted.
You may feel that organising your week is better than organising your day. If so, do that. Do whatever works for you and gives you the best return on your time.
If you decide to organise your days first, get it mastered before moving on to organising your weeks and then months.
Once organised. Stick to the plan. Do not deviate from it at all. Ensure that the most important things are done first. The tasks that don't help you achieve your goals should be given less priority over others.
3. Your Goals Are Out of Sight.
Out of sight, out of mind. Keep your goals in front of you. Having your goals around you constantly is a very effective way to always bring your focus back to where it should be.
Let's face it, the moment you leave your house there are a million and one things that can and will take your attention if you let it. By letting it, I mean that you don't have a strategy for countering distractions.
I sometimes carry my master book of goals with me and when there are idle moments (i.e. travelling, resting periods, etc) I will read them.
If I do not carry the master book, I will carry a small notepad that will have only my 12 month goals in them. This helps me with my short-term focus as well as the "to-do-list" and "not-to-do-list" I create the night before.
Another suggestion is writing your goals on small 3 x 5 index cards which easily fit in your pocket or wallet (folded).
I've tried this before but it didn't really work for me, as I have a habit of throwing things out of my pockets without noticing things inside papers. At least whoever finds them may get motivated!
However, many people have reported this strategy to be effective for them.
4. You're Getting Off Track.
Check off your progress and action steps as you go. Throughout your day, make sure you are constantly checking off your list as you complete things.
This helps boost motivation.
They may be times when things may not get done. However, these should be the less important stuff. As long as your most important tasks are complete you will gain momentum and know that you're moving in the right direction.
Avoiding distractions will become a lot easier.
If you continue the process until you have developed an unconscious habit of doing this, you will find that your mind will be more focused and you will know what is worthy of your attention and what's not, keeping pointless distractions to a minimum.
Final Thoughts.
Setting goals is really the beginning. Just like most things in life, it's one thing starting but it's another to maintain.
There are many distractions out there and if you're not careful you will fall prey to them. It requires a bit of self-discipline and dedication to get it right but you will notice how much more you're focused on your goals and each day takes you closer and closer to your goals.
Make sure the goals you really have are the ones you really want, if not change them. It's not a big deal if you realise a goal no longer motivates you. This can happen. What's important is that you identify them and you replace them with goals that will keep you focused and motivated.
Organise your day so that each day you are doing something towards your goals. By planning your day in advance it is easier to know what to focus your efforts on. You will feel a whole lot more confident by using this process.
Keep your lists and goals in front of you. Why make it difficult for yourself? A million and one things are competing for your minds attention and they're very good at getting it. Give yourself a helping hand and keep your goals with you at all times.
Insight means in mind.
Adopt these strategies and I'm confident you will notice the benefits of doing so and the focus on your goals should sharpen.
